SUMMARY:Hamburg Sustainability Sessions (#HSS12) – Ukraine Nature Network: Navigating Polycrisis Together: Sustainable Toolkit for Land\, Forests\, Energy\, and Circular Waste
DESCRIPTION:This special online session will address the interconnected environmental challenges of our time through the lens of polycrisis\, with a focus on land degradation\, forest resilience\, energy security\, and circular waste management. In this context\, the event will also highlight the work of the Ukraine Nature Network and examine the severe environmental consequences of the war in Ukraine\, including ecosystem disruption\, forest damage\, soil and water contamination\, and pressure on waste and energy systems. \nBringing together researchers\, practitioners\, and institutions from different regions\, the session will explore how science\, policy\, and international cooperation can support environmental protection and recovery in conflict-affected settings. It will emphasize practical toolkits and strategies for strengthening resilience\, supporting nature restoration\, and enabling sustainable reconstruction pathways in Ukraine and beyond. \nThe event will also provide a platform for global dialogue and knowledge exchange\, including discussion of collaboration opportunities and financial mechanisms to support environmental action\, conservation\, and long-term recovery. \nThis session is organised by the European School of Sustainability Science and Research (ESSSR)\, Hamburg University of Applied Sciences (HAW Hamburg)\, the Inter-University Sustainable Development Research Programme (IUSDRP)\, and the European North-American Sustainability Research Consortium (ENASRC)\, with support from the Ukraine Nature Network (https://ukrainenaturenetwork.org/). \n  \nEvent details: \nDate: 23rd April 2026 \nTime: 01:00 p.m – 03:00 p.m CET (Central European Time) \nFormat: Online \nLanguage: English \nCost: None! \n  \nSpeakers: \n \nProfessor  Daniel Muller \nholds a diploma and doctoral degree in agricultural sciences and is Adjunct Professor of Geography at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. He is Head of the Land Systems Group at the Leibniz Institute of Agricultural Development in Transition Economies (IAMO). His research focuses on land-system change and its implications for rural livelihoods\, food security\, carbon dynamics\, and biodiversity\, with particular emphasis on climate change impacts on agriculture and related mitigation and adaptation strategies. His regional expertise centres on the Western Balkans and the post-Soviet region\, especially Ukraine\, where he examines land-use change\, agricultural transformation\, and resilience under conditions of political\, economic\, and environmental stress. He is a member of the Scientific Steering Committee of the Global Land Programme (GLP).  \n  \n  \n  \n \nDr Oksana Pelyukh  \nholds master’s degrees in administration and management of Organizations and in Environmental and Natural Resource Economics and obtained her PhD in Economics from the National University of Water and Environmental Engineering in 2020. She is a Senior Lecturer at the Ukrainian National Forestry University and a Postdoctoral Researcher at the University of Lodz\, Poland. She is a laureate of a two-year scholarship from the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine and a grant from the President of Ukraine for young scientists and was awarded the Forests 2021 Early Career Investigator Award. Her research focuses on integrating ecosystem services into decision-making processes and analysing stakeholder engagement in natural resource management\, with particular emphasis on urban resilience and nature-based solutions in the context of crises and recovery.  \n  \n  \n  \n \nDr Ihor Honcharenko \nis a Visiting/Grant Researcher at the University of Eastern Finland\, working in the Fine Particle and Aerosol Technology Laboratory within the Department of Environmental and Biological Sciences. He has more than ten years of experience in environmental research\, risk assessment\, and recovery-oriented programming in crisis-affected contexts. His work integrates ecological safety\, air pollution assessment\, circular bioenergy\, and GIS-based multi-hazard analysis. Prior to joining the University of Eastern Finland\, he led research and assessment activities in the humanitarian and environmental sectors in Ukraine\, with a particular focus on disaster risk reduction\, recovery planning\, and data-driven decision-making. He has authored over 25 scientific publications and contributed to a wide range of applied environmental and resilience-related projects.  \n  \n  \n  \n \nDr Ihor Soloviy \nis Professor at the Department of Economics\, Tourism and Recreation at the Ukrainian National Forestry University in Lviv. His teaching includes Environmental Economics\, Sustainable Strategic Enterprise Management\, Sustainable Business and Marketing\, Circular Bioeconomy in the Forest Sector\, and Green Project Development and Management. He is Vice-President of the Forestry Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and has extensive international experience as a consultant for organisations including IUCN\, FAO\, WWF\, and the World Bank. His work focuses on forest policy\, ecosystem services\, and the socio-economic impacts of forestry practices.  \nAs a Fulbright scholar\, he conducted research at the University of North Carolina and the University of Vermont. At the national level\, he has led projects commissioned by the Ukrainian Ministry of Education and Ministry of the Environment on ecosystem services and environmental policy. Before transitioning to academia\, he built extensive industry experience\, serving as Legal Counsel at Unilever Germany\, Regulatory Adviser at Unilever N.V. in the Netherlands\, and General Counsel\, Foods at Unilever PLC in London\, where he specialized in Food and Advertising Law. Since his appointment as professor at HAW Hamburg in 2013\, he has also been a guest lecturer at the Europa Institute of the University of Zurich and Michigan State University. Currently\, he leads the HAW.RESILIENT (RESI) project\, an initiative focused on fostering international collaboration and resilience in higher education. The project is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) through the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). \n\n \nProfessor Dr. Belén López \nProject coordinator of HG Sustainable\, and Erasmus + (https://hgsustainable.eu/). Full Professor at ESIC University\, where she was awarded two six-year research periods in 2022 for her outstanding academic contributions. Her work centers on business communication\, corporate social responsibility (CSR)\, sustainability\, and higher education\, with a focus on understanding the intersection of sustainability in both business and education. Dr. López is an active participant in international conferences\, offering fresh insights into sustainable development from an academic standpoint. Since 2019\, she has served as the Director of Corporate Social Responsibility at ESIC University and currently leads the Higher Degree in Sustainability Management. As a passionate researcher\, she also directs the European Erasmus+ project\, HG Sustainable (2022–2024)\, which explores the role of higher education in advancing sustainable development. This project has garnered recognition within the European Union as a model of best practices. \nMs. Li Lou \nis a project manager at Hamburg University of Applied Sciences and an interdisciplinary researcher specializing in sustainability\, comparative studies\, and education innovation. With a legal background—holding an LL.M. from Cornell Law School and pursuing a Ph.D. in international law at the University of Cologne—she bridges academia\, industry\, and policy. She has held roles as a senior legal consultant for multiple international businesses\, a visiting scholar at the University of Bergen\, a lecturer and program manager at the Technical University of Berlin. Her recent work focuses on digital transformation in education\, AI-driven learning strategies\, and the development of interdisciplinary projects to foster innovative and integrative learning environments. \nDr. Obed Freedom Chauke\nLecturer at the Durban University of Technology\, specializing in Public Relations and Strategic Communication. With a Master’s degree in Marketing and currently pursuing a PhD in Public Relations and Communication Management\, brings a strong academic and practical foundation to teaching. Has many works about decolonizing education through project-based learning and innovative teaching methods\, such as design thinking bootcamps.\n\n\nProfessor Rudi Pretorius \nlectured Geography at the University of South Africa (Unisa)\, an open distance e-learning (OdeL) institution\, over a period of 38 years until his retirement at the end of 2024. During his career he experimented with and implemented innovative OdeL approaches in Geography and sustainability applications\, on which he also published widely. He has been appointed since March 2025 as a Honorary Professor in the Department of Geography\, Unisa on the basis of his established and sustained academic reputation and standing in his fields of expertise\, that include education for sustainability\, ODeL applications in Geography and environmental study fields\, sustainability in higher education\, sustainable development and the SDGs. His publication record includes papers in several international journals and he recently co-edited the books Sustainable Development in Africa: Fostering Sustainability in one the World´s Most Promising Continents and SDGs in Africa and the Middle East\, both from Springer Nature. He is a Deputy Editor for Discover Sustainability and the International Journal of Sustainability in Higher Education. After working on conflict pollution and the toxic remnants of war for many years\, he established the non-profit Conflict and Environment Observatory (CEOBS) to monitor and raise awareness of the environmental and derived humanitarian consequences of conflicts. He has contributed to a wide range of domestic\, regional and international initiatives on conflict and the environment\, and CEOBS’ current research focus is on Sudan and Ukraine.\n\nIvan Tymofeiev\n\nHe has a degree in Tourism and Ecology. For over six years\, have been working for the German Nature and Biodiversity Conservation Union\, where have successfully coordinated and implemented more than 30 nature conservation and environmental education projects across Central Asia and Eastern Europe.\n\n\nMarharyta Zhenchuk\nOver 20 years of professional experience and\, as a Senior Project Manager\, supports the ministry in advancing the climate agenda into national policy. Her work included coordinating the development of Ukraine’s National Climate Law\, supporting Ukraine’s participation in UNFCCC negotiations\, and establishing Ukraine’s first national pavilion at COP27. She also provides analytical expertise on carbon removals\, voluntary carbon markets\, and environmental finance mechanisms.\n\n \nDr. Olena Maslyukivska\nA Senior Lecturer at the Department of Environmental Studies at the National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy and the lead author of the Circularity Transformation Pathways chapter in UNEP’s flagship report\, Global Environment Outlook-7.
