SUMMARY:Symposium on Sustainability in the Curriculum and Operations of Universities in Brazil
DESCRIPTION:Sustainability in the curriculum and operations of universities in Brazil is a growing trend\, reflecting the global emphasis on addressing environmental challenges. Many universities offer degrees specifically focused on sustainability\, such as environmental science\, sustainable\ndevelopment\, and renewable energy. Also\, sustainability topics are integrated into a variety of disciplines\, from engineering and architecture to business and social sciences. Moreover\, many universities have established research centers dedicated to sustainability\, focusing on issues like climate change\, biodiversity\, and sustainable urban planning. As a growing trend\, student groups often lead sustainability initiatives on campus\, organising events\, workshops\, and awareness campaigns. From the operations side\, many universities are investing in energy-efficient buildings and renewable energy sources\, such as solar panels and wind turbines. Comprehensive recycling programmes and waste reduction strategies are being implemented to minimize the environmental footprint of universities. There are also other measures which include rainwater harvesting\, efficient irrigation systems\, and water recycling. \nThere is a perceived need for events which may cater for in-depth discussions about how universities in Brazil are implementing sustainability in their curriculum and operations. SUMMARY:World Symposium on Sustainable Tourism (WSST 2025)
DESCRIPTION:In recent decades\, tourism has experienced unprecedented growth\, emerging as one of the world’s largest and fastest-growing industries. While this growth has brought numerous benefits\, it has also raised significant concerns about its environmental\, social\, and cultural impacts. Traditional tourism practices often contribute to environmental degradation\, biodiversity loss\, exploitation of natural resources\, and cultural commodification. Moreover\, communities in popular tourist destinations frequently face challenges such as overcrowding\, pollution\, loss of traditional livelihoods\, and cultural erosion. \nIn response to these challenges\, the concept of sustainable tourism has gained traction as a viable alternative to conventional tourism models. Sustainable tourism\, also known as responsible tourism or eco-tourism\, seeks to minimize the negative impacts of tourism while maximizing its benefits for host communities\, the environment\, and future generations. At its core\, sustainable tourism aims to strike a balance between economic growth\, environmental conservation\, and socio-cultural preservation. Key principles of sustainable tourism include: \nEnvironmental conservation: Sustainable tourism practices prioritize the protection and preservation of natural ecosystems\, biodiversity\, and landscapes. This involves minimizing carbon emissions\, reducing waste generation\, conserving water resources\, and promoting renewable energy use.\nCommunity empowerment: Sustainable tourism aims to empower local communities by involving them in decision-making processes\, ensuring equitable distribution of benefits\, and respecting indigenous rights and cultural traditions. Community-based tourism initiatives enable local residents to actively participate in and benefit from tourism activities. \nCultural preservation: Sustainable tourism values and respects the cultural heritage and identities of host communities. It promotes authentic cultural experiences\, supports local artisans and cultural practitioners\, and fosters cross-cultural understanding and appreciation.\nEconomic sustainability: Sustainable tourism endeavors to generate economic benefits that contribute to local livelihoods\, job creation\, and poverty alleviation\, particularly in rural and marginalized areas. It promotes fair wages\, ethical employment practices\, and responsible business operations within the tourism supply chain. \nAs awareness of sustainability issues continues to grow\, there is a growing momentum within the tourism industry to embrace sustainable practices and initiatives. Governments\, businesses\, non-profit organizations\, and civil society actors are increasingly recognizing the importance of integrating sustainability into tourism planning\, development\, and management processes.\nThe World Symposium on Sustainable Tourism (WSST) serves as a timely and essential event for stakeholders to come together\, share knowledge\, and chart a course towards a more sustainable future for tourism. By fostering collaboration\, innovation\, and collective action\, WSST aims to catalyze positive change within the tourism industry\, ensuring that tourism remains a force for good for both people and the planet. \nFlyer of the event  \nRegister now! \n\n\n\n\n\n\nAIMS OF THE SYMPOSIUM\n\n………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………… \n\n\n\n\n\na) to provide interested actors from across the world with an opportunity to present their work in the field of sustainable tourism;\nb) to provide a platform for knowledge exchange and collaboration among diverse stakeholders to advance sustainable tourism practices.\nc) to discuss innovative approaches\, experiences\, best practices\, and success stories in sustainable tourism from around the world.\nd) to facilitate discussions on key challenges and emerging trends in sustainable tourism development.\ne) to foster partnerships and synergies to enhance the sustainability and resilience of tourism destinations.\nf) to promote awareness and education on the principles of sustainable tourism among industry professionals\, policymakers\, and the general public.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPROFILE OF PARTICIPANTS\n\n………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………… \n\n\n\n\nWSST invites participation from a diverse range of stakeholders involved in the tourism sector\, including: \n\nTourism industry professionals\, including hoteliers\, tour operators\, and destination managers.\nAcademics\, researchers\, and students specializing in tourism management\, environmental studies\, and sustainable development.\nGovernment representatives and policymakers shaping tourism policies and regulations.\nNon-governmental organizations (NGOs) advocating for sustainable tourism practices and community development.\nIndigenous communities and local stakeholders engaged in tourism-related activities.\nSustainable tourism consultants and experts offering insights and guidance on sustainable tourism strategies.\nEnvironmental and cultural heritage conservation organizations with an interest in sustainable tourism initiatives.\nTravelers and consumers committed to supporting responsible tourism practices\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPUBLISHING OPPORTUNITIES\n\n………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………… \n\n\n\n\nParticipants who wish to submit a paper will be invited to contribute toward an edited volume entitled “Forecasting Sustainable Tourism: Challenges\, Strategies and Innovations.” This book will be aimed at a wide readership\, notably those on the front line of sustainability efforts at universities and companies\, along with policymakers\, researchers\, and students. \nThe book will be a further volume of the award-winning “World Sustainability Series” published by Springer\, which since its creation in 2008 has become the world’s leading book series on sustainable development. SUMMARY:5th World Symposium on Sustainability Science and Research
DESCRIPTION:Sustainability Transition and Global Citizenship in the Digital Era: Innovations in Universities \nThere is a world consensus that Sustainability Science  – i.e.\, a branch of science concerned with an integrated view of the three main dimensions of sustainable development – can contribute to realising the vision set in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The concepts of sustainability Science and transition are deeply interconnected\, with Sustainability Transition involving fundamental changes in both environmental and socio-technical systems. This transition addresses complementary aspects of achieving a sustainable and equitable future. Within this context\, “Sustainable Global Citizenship”\, has emerged as a crucial area of discussion\, emphasising the importance of citizens’ activities under the principles of sustainable development\, on both local and global scales. In the digital era\, Higher Education Institutions are at the forefront of driving innovations that leverage digital technologies to promote sustainability transition and global citizenship\, facilitating new ways of learning and collaborating towards Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). \nFurther to the 1st\, 2nd\, 3rd\, and 4th World Symposium on Sustainability Science and Research\, held in the UK (2018)\, Brazil (2019)\, online (2021)\, and Spain (2023) respectively\, the 5th World Symposium on Sustainability Science and Research is now being prepared. The event is organised by the European School of Sustainability Science and Research (ESSSR)\, the International Sustainable Development Research Programme (IUSDRP) and the European North American Sustainability Research Consortium (ENASRC) in cooperation with various organisations. Universidade Aberta will host it\, and the event will be held in Lisbon\, Portugal\, on 26th-27th May 2025. \nUnder the theme “Sustainability Transition and Global Citizenship in the Digital Era: Innovations in Universities”\, the 5th World Symposium on Sustainability Science and Research aims to identify and disseminate ideas and experiences on how institutions are leveraging their practices and innovative digital technologies to foster sustainable transition and achieve Sustainable Global Citizenship. SUMMARY:Symposium on Sustainability in Accounting\, Management\, Finance and Taxation Programmes in Higher Education
DESCRIPTION:Sustainability has become a critical area of focus globally. As the world grapples with climate change\, resource depletion\,  and environmental degradation\, there is an urgent need for education systems to incorporate sustainability principles. This is especially so in higher education. The integration of sustainability in accounting\, administration\, and financing programmes has become increasingly essential due to growing awareness of environmental\, social\, and economic challenges. For instance\, accounting practices now need to include environmental impacts. This involves tracking and reporting on carbon footprints\, resource consumption\, waste management\, and other environmental metrics. Also\, traditional financial metrics are being complemented with sustainability indicators\, such as the Triple Bottom  Line (People\, Planet\, Profit)\, to provide a holistic view of a company’s performance. \nMoreover\, governments and regulatory bodies are imposing stricter environmental and sustainability reporting requirements. Accountants must ensure compliance with these regulations. Furthermore\,  employers are increasingly demand that university graduates are familiar with Environmental\, Social\, and Governance (ESG) factors and how these are used in their decision-making processes. Accurate and transparent sustainability accounting can attract responsible investments.  Finally\, sustainability issues\, such as climate change and resource scarcity\, pose significant risks to businesses. Accounting for these risks help organisations to develop strategies to mitigate them. \nIt is based on the perceived need to better understand how sustainability may be included as part of study programmes in accounting\, administration and financing courses\, to the advantage of teaching staff and students that the  “Symposium on Sustainability in Accounting\, Management\,  Finance and Taxation Programmes in Higher Education” is being organised.  It will be held in the city of Barcelos\, Portugal\, on 29th-30th May 2025. \nRegister now! \n\n\n\n\n\n\nObjectives of the Symposium\n\n………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………… \n\n\n\n\nThe objectives of the Symposium are: \n\na) to promote the importance of sustainability in accounting\, management\,  finance  and taxation programmes in higher education\nb) to provide a platform for universities to share successful initiatives in respect of research and teaching in these areas\, and promote good practice\nc) to encourage partnerships between universities\, industry experts\, and government bodies working in the field of sustainability in accounting\, management\,  finance  and taxation programmes in higher education\n\nThe event also aims to motivate universities to implement new\, effective teaching and research initiatives which may foster a better awareness among students on the many opportunities offered by the inclusion of a sustainability dimension in sustainability in accounting\, management\,  finance  and taxation programmes. \n\n\n\n\n\nOrganisers\n\n………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………… \n\n\n\n\nThe event is hosted by the Research Centre on Accounting and Taxation of the Polytechnic University of Cávado and Ave\, in Barcelos\, Portugal. SUMMARY:World Symposium on Sustainability Leadership (WSSL 2025)
DESCRIPTION:Even though leadership is a key component in the implementation of sustainability at organisations and universities\, there is a paucity of events that focus on this aspect. In order to fill in this gap\, the World Symposium on Sustainability Leadership is being organised by the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences (Germany)\, the University of Salamanca (Spain)\, in cooperation with the Manchester Metropolitan University (UK)\, the Inter-University Sustainable Development Research Programme and the European School of Sustainability Science and Research (ESSSR). \nRegister now! \n\n\n\n\n\n\nBACKGROUND\n\n………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………… \n\n\n\n\nThere are numerous definitions of the term sustainable leadership in the literature. These differ in their definitions of leadership and sustainability. Furthermore\, there is a difference between the characteristics and skills of the decision-makers and the logic of management theory. In any case\, sustainable leadership or responsible leadership has the task of shaping the interplay of forces between conventional and sustainability-related decision-making premises\, emphasising the need for a greater emphasis on considerations of sustainable development as part of decision-making processes. This applies to both public and private organisations. \nEven though leadership is a key component in the implementation of sustainability at organisations\, there is a paucity of events where a special focus on this aspect is given. In order to fill in this gap\, the World Symposium on Sustainability Leadership is being organised by the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences (Germany)\, the University of Salamanca (Spain)\, in cooperation with the Manchester Metropolitan University (UK)\, the Inter-University Sustainable Development Research Programme\, and the European School of Sustainability Science and Research (ESSSR). \nThis Symposium is aimed at those working in or concerned with leadership in a sustainable development context. It provides an opportunity to showcase projects\, approaches\, and activities that investigate or utilise leadership principles and methods as a means of guiding the world of organisations. Among other factors\, the undertaking of certain strategies is made difficult by the general lack of leadership or a sound leadership framework. This paper presents an analysis about the misconceptions related to the implementation of leadership and universties\, and describes the most widespread ones\, as well as their implications. A special emphasis is given to the problems and barriers caused by misinformation\, which – in turn – prevent the potential of leadership from being realised. Finally\, some concrete steps which may be taken in order to break the misconceptions and foster a more systematic view of leadership strategies in higher education\, are outlined.

SUMMARY:Symposium on Using Artificial Intelligence in Sustainability Teaching and Learning
DESCRIPTION:Sustainability has become a critical area of focus globally. As the world grapples with climate change\, resource depletion\, and environmental degradation\, there is an urgent need for education systems to incorporate sustainability principles. Educators need innovative tools to teach these complex topics effectively\, and Artificial Intelligence (AI) can provide some of these tools. AI can personalise learning experiences\, making them more engaging and effective. For example\, AI-powered tools can adapt content to match students’ learning styles\, provide real-time feedback\, and facilitate immersive simulations of sustainable practices. These capabilities can significantly enhance students’ understanding and retention of sustainability concepts. \nAI also helps analyse large datasets to provide insights into environmental patterns and trends. Educators can use these insights to develop more accurate and relevant teaching materials. Additionally\, AI can help students learn how to interpret and use data in their sustainability projects\, fostering critical thinking and analytical skills. SUMMARY:2nd Symposium Amazon 2030 – Sustainability Issues in the World's Largest Rainforest Region
DESCRIPTION:The 30th Conference of the Parties (COP30)\, a pivotal event in the global fight against climate change\, will be held in the heart of the Amazon rainforest in 2025. This historic decision underscores the urgency of addressing environmental issues directly within one of the world’s most vital ecosystems. The Amazon will provide a fitting backdrop for international leaders to convene and formulate strategies aimed at mitigating and adapting to climate change and promoting sustainable development. \nDeforestation is a major problem in the Amazon region as a whole\, and in Brazil in particular. To date\, nearly 800\,000km² of Brazil’s original 4 million km² of Amazon forest has been depleted due to a variety of economic activities. These include uncontrolled logging\, large-scale farming\, mining\, large road construction project and dams\, among others. Together\, these activities have raised serious concerns about the stability of the Amazon rainforests\, some of which has already been converted into drier savannahs known as cerrado. \nThere is a need to discuss not only the causes but also the possible solutions to the problems the Amazon region is facing today\, and to identify sustainable solutions. Against this backdrop\, and as COP30 offers a unique opportunity to bring global attention to the Amazon’s challenges\, the 2nd Symposium Amazon 2030 – Sustainability Issues in the World’s Largest Rainforest Region is being organized by the Inter-University Sustainable Development Programme (IUSDRP)\, the International Climate Change Information and Research Programme (ICCIRP)\, Hamburg University of Applied Sciences (Germany)\, Manchester Metropolitan University (UK) and the University Nilton Lins (Brazil)\, in collaboration with various organisations\, including the Pontifical Catholic University of Parana (PUCPR).
