SUMMARY:2nd Symposium Amazon 2030 – Sustainability Issues in the World's Largest Rainforest Region
DESCRIPTION:The 30th Conference of the Parties (COP30)\, a pivotal event in the global fight against climate change\, will be held in the heart of the Amazon rainforest in 2025. This historic decision underscores the urgency of addressing environmental issues directly within one of the world’s most vital ecosystems. The Amazon will provide a fitting backdrop for international leaders to convene and formulate strategies aimed at mitigating and adapting to climate change and promoting sustainable development. \nDeforestation is a major problem in the Amazon region as a whole\, and in Brazil in particular. To date\, nearly 800\,000km² of Brazil’s original 4 million km² of Amazon forest has been depleted due to a variety of economic activities. These include uncontrolled logging\, large-scale farming\, mining\, large road construction project and dams\, among others. Together\, these activities have raised serious concerns about the stability of the Amazon rainforests\, some of which has already been converted into drier savannahs known as cerrado. \nThere is a need to discuss not only the causes but also the possible solutions to the problems the Amazon region is facing today\, and to identify sustainable solutions. Against this backdrop\, and as COP30 offers a unique opportunity to bring global attention to the Amazon’s challenges\, the 2nd Symposium Amazon 2030 – Sustainability Issues in the World’s Largest Rainforest Region is being organized by the Inter-University Sustainable Development Programme (IUSDRP)\, the International Climate Change Information and Research Programme (ICCIRP)\, Hamburg University of Applied Sciences (Germany)\, Manchester Metropolitan University (UK) and the University Nilton Lins (Brazil)\, in collaboration with various organisations\, including the Pontifical Catholic University of Parana (PUCPR). The event is also organized by the German-Brazilian Science and Technology Network (GERBRAS-SCIENCENET). \nThe first edition of this Symposium was held at the Federal University of Western Pará (UFOPA)\, Santarém\, Brazil\, on 4-5 September 2023. This event\, the “2nd Symposium Amazon 2030 – Sustainability Issues in the World’s Largest Rainforest Region”\, will be held in the University Nilton Lins\, Manaus\, Amazonas\, Brazil\, on 6-7 November 2025. The dates make it convenient for delegates interested in joining COP30 (10-21 November) after the Symposium. \nRegister now! \n\n\n\n\n\n\nAims\n\n………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………… \n\n\n\n\nThe Symposium has the following objectives: \n\ni. to disseminate information on ongoing research projects and practical projects in the field of climate change\, environmental conservation and sustainability taking place in the Amazon region;\nii. to present innovative approaches in teaching and research focusing on the Amazon rainforests;\niii. to facilitate the exchange of experience and information between researchers from universities\, but also from research centres\, NGOs\, companies and other institutions;\niv. to provide opportunities for further networking and contact building.\n\nThe Symposium will present state-of-the-art projects and initiatives in the nexus Amazon rainforests and sustainability\, as well as innovative teaching and research approaches. In particular\, projects that are “cross-sectoral” and innovative and serve as examples of inter-institutional cooperation will be presented at the Symposium. \n\n\n\n\n\nThemes\n\n………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………… \n\n\n\n\nThe Symposium will provide a unique opportunity to holistically discuss matters related to sustainable development in respect of the Amazon region\, tackling issues related to: \n\nAmazon and land use issues\nBiodiversity conservation and ecosystems services\nIssues related to indigenous people\nEcological threats by fires\nTerritorial management\nNatural resources management\nFood security\nPoverty and social justice\nSustainable development prospects\nClimate change\nCircular economy & technologies to protect the environment\nCOP23: opportunities and challenges for the Amazon\nEducation for sustainability\nESG and sustainable business opportunities\nInnovation for sustainable actions\nSustainable supply chains and local development\nCultural aspects of local communities\nSustainable tourism\nSustainable Agriculture\n\nOther themes may be suggested\, please contact the organisers to discuss them. \nThe Symposium is also part of the “Universities and Climate Change Initiative”\, a worldwide effort led by the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences in Germany\, to combine the knowledge and know-how of universities\, in order to tackle the many challenges posed by climate change. \n\n\n\n\n\nDates and Venue\n\n………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………… \n\n\n\n\nThe event will be held in the city of Manaus\, in the State of Amazonas\, Brazil\, on 6th-7th November 2025. \nManaus\, the capital of the state of Amazonas\, is a vibrant city located in the heart of the Amazon rainforest. Situated at the confluence of the Rio Negro and the Amazon River\, Manaus is one of the largest cities in Brazil and a hub for ecotourism. Manaus has its own airport\, providing direct connections to major cities in Brazil\, making it an accessible destination for global delegates attending the Symposium. \n\n\n\n\n\nSubmission of abstracts and publication of papers\n\n………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………… \n\n\n\n\nExpressions of interest to attend the event\, initially consisting of an abstract (200 words) with the full contact details of the contributing authors\, should be submitted using the following registration form: https://forms.office.com/e/9iqgkfNhzY  \nPapers selected and presented at the event may subsequently be considered for publication in the book “Fostering Sustainable Development in the Amazon Region”. The book will be part of the World Sustainability Series. Published by Springer Nature\, this is the leading peer-reviewed book series on matters related to sustainable development. Please note that submissions to the book are subject of standard peer-review procedures. \n\n\n\n\n\nDeadlines\n\n………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………… \n\n\n\n\nThe deadlines are as follows: \n\nFinal deadline for submission of abstracts: 30th June 2025\nDeadline for registrations: 30th July 2025\nDeadline for the submission of papers: 30th November 2025\n\n(The full paper for the publication in the book should be sent after the conference) \n\n\n\n\n\nRegistration fees\n\n………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………… \n\n\n\n\nA fee of Euro 250 will be charged to international delegates\, and R$ 560 for delegates from Brazil.
