HSS #8 – Sustainable Laboratories
September 12: 13:00 - 14:30
Laboratories consume significantly more resources than regular offices—up to 5 to 10 times more. Additionally, they contribute approximately 2% to global plastic waste. So while we are dedicated to researching a more sustainable future, it is equally important to reflect on our own practices and make necessary adjustments. Have you ever considered how sustainable your research activities are?
The ESSSR is therefore joining forces with the NachLabs project, funded by the German Environmental Foundation (DBU), to organize a Hamburg Sustainability Session on sustainable laboratories. Together, we will explore why sustainability in laboratories is important, how it can benefit your research, and practical steps to achieve it.
The presenters:
Valeria Scagliotti (SELS) as a former Postdoctoral Researcher at King’s College London and a My Green Lab Ambassador, Valeria Scagliotti brings extensive experience in sustainable practices within laboratory settings and invaluable insights into creating environmentally friendly and socially responsible laboratories.
Tobias Werres (IUTA), earned his PhD in Analytical Chemistry researching miniaturization HPLC systems to enhance their efficiency and sustainability.
As an advocate for green chemistry, he believes that miniaturization will be a main pillar in creating greener laboratories.
His work ensures a reduced environmental footprint while maintaining high analytical performance.
Caterina Baars (HAW Hamburg, FTZ-NK) is a junior researcher and project manager at the Research and Transfer Centre for Sustainability and Climate Change Management, with a background in health sciences.
